In last week, a depression occurred and its influence of depression in the Bay of Bengal caused heavy rainfall and tidal surges in coastal areas of Bangladesh. As a result, many embankments’ points were breached by the tide surges, flooding hundreds of villages in Cox’s Bazar, Bhola, Patuakhali, Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts.
Total four people were reported died due to storm-related disasters caused in Bhola and Cox’s Bazar districts. In addition to the flooding, numerous houses have been damaged by the force of the tides.
In response to the ongoing disaster, COAST Foundation started urgent relief works for the affected community in Bhola and Cox’s Bazar district. COAST initially allocated 5 Lakh taka from own fund to provide lifesaving assistance to the affected communities specially in Char (Island) areas adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. Communication with mainland stopped with Saint Martin Island due to rough weather and people are suffering shortages of daily essentials there.
As per instructions of SK Ahsan Uddin, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Teknaf, COAST prepared food items for 100 families for Saint Martin union. Besides, 200 families will be supported at Char Kalatoli in Monpura Upazila and 100 families will be supported in Chadpur union (Char Mozzamel) in Tazumuddin Upazila in Bhola district.
Today, two families’ members received total 15,000 (Fifteen thousand) taka from COAST own fund who died in recent disasters.
In disaster response, COAST Executive Director M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is leading the response team and organized emergency meeting on 31 May 2025. He said that its our responsibility to support the affected community during the disaster as we are accountable to them. He also said that COAST is trying to manage more fund from donor to support the affected community as the need is still significant.
