Request to India to Release of 83 Bangladeshi Fishers: COAST Stands with the Families, Calls for Regional Cooperation

0

COAST supported the families of 83 Bangladeshi fishers who were recently detained by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) after unintentionally crossing into Indian territorial waters. It provided BDT. 3000 for each of the affected families. These incidents occurred mostly due to dense winter fog and poor visibility.

These fishers went to the sea only to sustain their families. But the harsh weather and absence of modern navigational tools led them to unintentionally cross into foreign waters, and subsequent detention. Their sudden disappearance has left their families in deep despair and economic hardship.

COAST has appealed to the High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh to act swiftly on humanitarian grounds. COAST is also in communication with rights-based organizations in neighboring countries, seeking to amplify the call for the fishers’ immediate release and safe repatriation.

On the ground, COAST advocates for sustainable solutions to prevent such occurrences, including installation of SONAR technology, strengthening regional cooperation, and an expedited repatriation mechanism to reduce detention times.

COAST Foundation reiterates that the detained fishers should be treated with dignity, and every effort must be made to reunite them with their families without delay. These fishers are not criminals, they are victims of nature and inadequate infrastructure. Justice demands their swift return.

COAST remains committed to its mission of protecting the rights, livelihoods, and dignity of coastal small-scale fisherfolk.
