22 August 2024, From last week, the heavy rainfall causes flash flood in Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla and Chattogram hills track areas. Flood water crosses above danger levels in Feni and Cumilla districts, potentially maintaining the current flood situation in low-lying areas.
In the southeastern and eastern regions, steady water levels are expected in rivers like the Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Gumti, with the Muhuri, Halda, and Gumti rivers exceeding the danger levels.
Specifically, the Water Development Board reports that the Muhuri River is currently 86 centimeters above the danger mark, while the Feni Weather Office recorded 97 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
In this situation, COAST Foundation (www.coastbd.net) started emergency rescues and dry food distribution in Feni and Noakhali district from its own fund.
In Noakhali, the flash flood situation deteriorated today due to incessant rains and tidal surges coming. Uncounted affected people took shelter in safe places.
Approximately 3 million people were affected in different districts. According to government sources, nearly 300,000 people were evacuated from affected areas.
COAST field staff has engaged in emergency rescues and relief program in Feni and Noakhali districts. Besides, COAST started providing dry foods package distribution in shelter centers.
COAST is supporting two local NGOs (OPCA and PRAN) from Noakhali to engage them in urgent relief and rescue work with dry food and bottled water and saline in the shelters.
COAST initially provided BDT 800,000 (Eight hundred thousand taka only) for the relief works and plan to support more if needed. COAST is communicating with some donor agencies for large scale of support for the flood affected people.
COAST Executive Director M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is coordinating everything from central office, Dhaka. Besides, other some senior staff are supporting field team to respond the crisis affected people.
The situation is very critical and urgent rescue support require specially from Feni district. Rescues boats, dry food and water are essential right now in the affected areas.
