COAST colleagues across 45 Upazilas in 12 coastal districts and the capital solemnly observed International Mother Language Day on February 21. Honoring the sacrifice of the language martyrs of 1952, regional and branch offices placed wreaths at monuments, while representatives from the central office paid tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar.

COAST released a message emphasizing the significance of 21 February as a milestone of acclaiming self-respect for the nation, leading to independence and freedom. “The spirit of this day reminds us of our right to self-expression and self-reliance,” said Executive Director Rezaul Karim Chowdhury. “We must uphold its values to challenge injustice, defend human rights and democracy, and ensure participation for collective well-being. Together, we will build a more self-reliant and prosperous Bangladesh, he added.”

Before UNESCO declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day in 1999, Bangladesh observed it as a National Day in honor of the language heroes. Now recognized globally, the day stands as a symbol of self-dignity, rights, and freedom of expression for all.
