50 YEARS OF BANGLADESH_Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
(17 March 1920 – 15 August 1975)
The government has officially announced the commemoration of Mujib Borsho, which marks the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation. Born on March 17, 1920, in Gopalganj Mohokuma, he was the son of Sheikh Lutfur Rahman and Sayera Khatun. Even in his early years, Mujibur Rahman displayed remarkable intelligence. He received his primary and secondary education in Gopalganj before enrolling at Kolkata Islamic College, where he earned a B.A. degree in 1947.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emerged as a charismatic leader, leading movements and uprisings against British rule in India. He then guided the Bengalis of East Pakistan in their struggle against the oppressive actions of the postcolonial Pakistani government. Eventually, his efforts culminated in creating an independent nation, Bangladesh, in 1971. He served as the head of the Awami League and became the first President of Bangladesh during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Prime Minister in independent Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujib is affectionately referred to as Sheikh Mujib and is honored with the Bangabandhu title, “Friend of Bengal.”
The government has declared Mujib Borsho as a year of tribute and respect to commemorate his 100th birth anniversary. This milestone will be celebrated with utmost reverence. The life and struggle of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will continue to inspire us to work tirelessly for the betterment of our country and its people.
COAST Observes National Mourning Day in Remembrance of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
Dhaka, 15th August 2023. On the solemn occasion of National Mourning Day, COAST Foundation paid heartfelt homage to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, by orchestrating a series of online and in-person discussion meetings. This day marks the tragic anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. COAST today organized discussion meetings in all 112 branch offices and all project and program offices. Centrally, an all-staff online meeting was also convened.
The commemorative event, moderated by Director-Admin Mustafa Kamal Akanda, unfolded a comprehensive discussion on the remarkable political philosophy and the immense political sacrifices of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The legacy of his Six Point demand, which laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s autonomy and eventual independence, was discussed. The contributions of Bangamata Fazilatunnesa, the resilient partner of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were also highlighted during the sessions.
Moreover, the discussions delved deeply into Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s profound economic philosophy and his visionary dream of transforming Bangladesh into the ‘Sonar Bangla’ – a land of gold. His relentless efforts to eradicate poverty and injustice from the nation were meticulously explored. During the event, Bangabandhu’s conviction in the synergy of economic growth and social welfare to ensure prosperity for every citizen was acknowledged and respected.
Executive Director of COAST Foundation Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, alongside the senior staff members of the principal office participated the event. Their collective reflections underscored the enduring impact of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s visionary leadership. The occasion was further graced by distinguished guests, including Rafiqul Islam Khokon of Rupanator. Akbar Hossain, a brave freedom fighter and CSO leader from Rangpur, freedom fighter and CSO leader and the Executive Director of Dwip Unnayan Sangstha, Rafiqul Alam, Freedom Fighter and CSO leader Afzal Hossain also shared their insights.
Rafiqul Islam Khokon emphasized that the 15th of August is more than a day of mourning; it should serve as an occasion for us to collectively pledge our commitment to work hand in hand towards realizing the vision of Bangabandhu.
Akbar Hossain vividly discussed the pivotal role of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in securing Bangladesh’s independence. He emphasized that Bangabandhu’s leadership not only gained global recognition but also illuminated the Bengali nation on the world map. Mr. Akbar also commended the present Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the daughter of the Father of the Nation, for her instrumental contributions to fortify the nation. Rafiqul Alam recounted his inspiration to join the Six Point movement, deriving from Bangabandhu’s impassioned speeches. He openly critiqued the current education system of Bangladesh, asserting that it falls short of the ideals of patriotism.
