The Rohingya refugee crisis is one of the largest and most protracted humanitarian emergencies in the world. Since the Rohingya influx of 2017 in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, humanitarian organizations, governments, UN agencies, and national NGOs have been working in the refugee camps of Ukhiya and Teknaf subdistricts.
A key focus of these efforts has been Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions, which are essential for preventing disease outbreaks, improving public health, ensuring dignity, and protecting environmental health in the densely populated camps and surrounding host communities.
This assessment provides an overview of the Rohingya influx, the WASH context in the camps, current interventions, their impacts, and key recommendations to improve the sustainability and effectiveness of WASH services.
COAST Foundation has been implementing WASH interventions in Camp-15 in Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar with support from Tearfund Bangladesh since January 2026. The project focuses on the operation and maintenance of water distribution networks, the fecal sludge treatment plant, and the solid waste management plant, as well as the rehabilitation of WASH infrastructure such as latrines, bathing cubicles, and water points. It also includes hygiene promotion activities.
This impact assessment aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions, identify existing service gaps, and provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen sustainable WASH services for Rohingya refugees and host communities.
